Description

The New Model Police revolver introduced in about 1865 was meant to compete with Colt’s 1862 Police and pocket revolver of navy caliber, and was made from about 1865 to 1873. This percussion gun came on the market just as the percussion ignition system began to fade into history. Customers demanded self-contained cartridge guns, and with the Rollin White patent bound to expire in a few years, the days of the percussion gun were numbered. All the major makers – Colt, Remington, Hopkins & Allen, were gearing up to get into the cartridge gun business, and as soon as the patent had expired, they started marketing their own cartridge guns. They all had a large inventory of percussion gun parts on hand, though, and as there was not much demand for percussion guns anymore, they had to find ways to convert their stock to cartridge use. This Police model is one of these conversions. While Colt had their own way of converting their percussion guns to cartridge use – most notably the Richards-Mason inventions, Remington devised their conversion in a different manner. Theirs replaced the percussion cylinder with a new, bored-through cylinder and a recoil shield which attaches to the back of the cylinder. It is a very durable and sturdy design, and can be found on Police and New Model pocket revolvers.
This specimen is in excellent condition, with 75% original blue, fading to a plum brown on the frame. Faint case colors on the hammer and trigger, excellent grips, tight wood-to-metal fit, and 95% nickel plating on the trigger guard. The action is crisp and tight, and the markings are sharp. The bore of the 4 1/2 inch barrel is very good, with sharp, pronounced rifling and only one dark spot. The finest Remington Police I have ever had. SN 817, rated Excellent overall.
