Eugene Lefaucheux was to French gunmakers what Samuel Colt was to the Americans. He was of the new breed of Industrial Revolution businessmen who realized that the future of manufacturing lay in mass production. Eugene had learned his trade from his father, Casimir Lefaucheux, a renowned and sought-after craftsman and maker of fine firearms. Casimir, however, was an artisan. He worked in a small shop, with a hand-ful of workers and apprentices, individually finishing each piece by hand. His son, upon assuming the family business began to expand manufacturing on a true factory scale, and mass-produced his models with such accuracy that parts were interchangeable, and many pieces could be made at the same time. This is one of his small pocket revolvers, made probably around 1866 at his second factory in Liege, Belgium. It is a typical folding trigger model which was very popular on the Continent at the time, and copied by many makers for decades. It is in very good condition, with a finely engraved frame and cylinder. The metal surfaces are lightly pitted in places but retain a pleasing patina. The action is mostly accurate and the cylinder indexes correctly. The hammer gets caught on the sear in single action occasionally, but other than that it works fine. The bore of the 3 1/2 inch barrel shows strong rifling and is clean and bright, with very little corrosion. The grips are very good and undamaged. SN 30707, rated very good overall.
