Introduced in 1863, the Remington “New Model Army” would become one of the most important sidearms of the civil war, and the most serious competitor to Colt’s “1860 Army” revolver. The Remington is a very well-made, solid-frame design which was popular with both officers and enlisted men. Wild West showman William “Buffalo Bill” Cody claimed “It never failed me”.
This particular specimen is in very fine condition. It retains about 75 to 80% of its deep blue finish on the frame and cylinder, and about 30% on the 8 inch barrel. The screw heads are unmarred, the nipples undamaged, and the action is crisp and tight. The bore is excellent and shiny, with strong rifling. This gun could not have seen much action. It bears US ordnance markings – a cartouche “GP” (Giles Porter, 1862 to 1875), and sub-inspection marks “W” on various parts. The grips are very fine, without cracks, and only a few tiny chips missing out of the bottom and near the inside of the frame, some minor handling marks, scuffs and dents. SN#119609, rated very fine to excellent overall.
