The East India Company was formed by a group of English merchants in 1599 and received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1600, and although a private company by legal definition, its close ties and intermingled activities with the British governments over time have made it a pseudo-legal authority in many parts of Asia. What British government troops could or would not manage, the EIC with its private army of over 260,000 (twice the size of the British army) would take on. The EIC would assume control of large parts of India, China, Bengal and Mongolia, and rule much of Asia for over 270 years. Although the sheer size and reach of the company made it a most powerful influence in all of Asia, its persistent financial troubles finally caused the British government to assume all assets, beginning in 1858, and finally dissolving the company in 1878…
This service pistol is marked “1867 BIRMINGHAM” – a time when the British government had already assumed control of the company. Therefore, the stamp on the lock plate reads “EIG” – East India Government, and not the earlier “EIC” for East India Company. This is a massive, .65 caliber pistol with an 8-inch barrel and a very large lock. The action is very strong, the stock is in excellent condition with only minor handling marks and a very thin stress fracture around the wedge. There is a EIG cartouche on the left side of the stock. The tethered ram rod is excellent and complete, the nipple undamaged and clean. Tower proof marks (Crown over “T”, with arrow pointing down). NSN, rated very good overall.
